What can I expect in my first acupuncture session?

When you arrive for your first acupuncture visit you will be asked to complete initial paperwork. This can take up to 20 minutes so please plan to arrive a few minutes early. We also recommend that you wear loose, comfortable clothing and eat a light meal prior to your appointment. The initial acupuncture consultation takes approximately 1.5 hours and includes a detailed assessment and TCM diagnosis (tongue and pulse readings and symptom intake to determine patterns of disharmony in the body). Based on this evaluation, the acupuncturist will create your treatment plan. In addition to acupuncture, you may be prescribed an herbal formula and given nutritional or lifestyle recommendations. Follow-up acupuncture visits takes about 45 minutes and includes a brief follow-up on your progress. Each treatment is customized to meet your continually changing health patterns as you progress through your treatment plan. All treatments take place in an inviting room designed for healing and relaxation. We only use sterile, disposable needles and table coverings. We make every effort to ensure that your treatment is a comfortable, relaxing, and healing experience.

What is a normal course of treatment?

The number of treatments varies depending on the severity and duration of the condition as well as the strength and constitution of the patient. In general, acute conditions may take just a few treatments while chronic conditions may take longer to treat. Acupuncture has a cumulative effect. Once symptoms improve and overall harmony and balance are reached, treatments are reduced in frequency to maintain health and prevent reoccurrence. After the completion of your first visit, the recommended length of treatment will be discussed with you.

Does acupuncture hurt?

It is understandable to be apprehensive about the insertion of needles. Acupuncture needles cause minimal to no pain. They are very different than the hypodermic needles used at the doctor’s office to vaccinate or draw blood. Acupuncture needles are hair-thin, sterile and disposable. After insertion, patients often report sensations of tingling, warmth, or heaviness but rarely pain. Many patients report feeling a sense of deep relaxation or increased energy after a treatment. Sometimes the therapeutic changes are not felt until hours or days after a treatment.

Is acupuncture covered by insurance?

A growing number of insurance companies will reimburse for acupuncture treatments. Please check with your Insurer to determine the terms of your policy. Health and Wellness Acupuncture provides receipts with each visit that you can submit for insurance and flex savings reimbursement. Some insurance companies provide reimbursement under wellness benefits and some for the treatment of specific conditions. Health savings accounts and flexible spending accounts may require a letter of medical necessity for acupuncture, herbs, and nutritional supplements. If you need such a letter, please let us know and we can provide you with one. Please note that full payment is due at time of service and we cannot guarantee reimbursement.
